The municipality of Alkmaar asked Studio Wessels Boer to design two ‘gevelmakelaars’ for a new school building in picturesque De Rijp.
A ‘gevelmakelaar’ is a decorative crown that traditionally decorates the North Holland apex of a roof.
Wessels Boer came up with a peacock couple. The male is a bit like the peacock paper fan that you used to get on a sundae. Perky sat above the main entrance; he sets his feathers on display. When you turn around him you see his two-color, graphical finery transforming from very transparent to more dense.
The female sits on the adjacent ridge in the opposite direction with her back to the viewer. Seen from front it looks more like a conventional ‘gevelmakelaar’. Only from the side of the building you will see that the male and female face each other.
