Modelfactory

Pearled and coated stainless steel (tubes and inflated steel contours)
Hootsenheem 1, Veenendaal
Realisation: 2015
Commissioner: Municipality of Veenendaal
Production: Instaal
Photos: Willem Sluyterman van Loo

As a beacon the Model Factory is set amid a new neighborhood of Veenendaal. Three firmly stainless steel pipes carry a tubing system full of playfully attached icons: a Batman logo flanking a row of euro-signs, a Disney Castle blocked with a gate (or ‘hashtag’), two scooters form mirrored a Rorschach image and a swan surrounded by high-heeled pumps is an emblem. Also spread in the neighborhood you will see here and there a smiley, heart and other symbols. As if they were detached from the Model Factory and got stuck on lampposts in the streets. The objects symbolize the dreams, ideals and passions of young locals. At the request of the municipality Studio Wessels Boer involved them in the creation of the work.

The Model Factory is on a corner next to a bridge, nearby the main parking lot in the center of the district. This empty corner is now a space to stay, with a tube bench to sit on and with the artwork as a contemporary gazebo defining the space. The open design ensures that the work of art, although large in size, does not dominate but marks his surroundings.
The icons are made of two thin welded steel plates, which are inflated under high pressure until they puff up as helium balloons. The way they are attached to the steel frame, remind us of the way plastic figures for scale models are fixed in series to a frame, from which you can detach them easily. An image that matches a new housing estate.
